Content Creation and Stats

The art of content creation is a must-have for any artist in the modern era. Unfortunately, coming up with ideas when we are all more interested in using our creativity for our individual artistic preferences (voice over and music in my case) can be draining. You’ve probably seen musicians with video after video – some b-roll and some face to camera singing – promoting a single song repeatedly. Those do gain traction for the song, but there is also the side effect of people leaving negative comments.

Social Media can be a harsh place I’ve found. For women, we get a ton of comments from men about whether we are attractive or desire for a ‘good woman like you.’ It can be a little flattering but also demeaning depending on the choice of words. How do you even respond to that? I’m going with the strategy of don’t. If it is an innocent comment, not creepy, an aww thanks or liking the comment is nice, but some are the equivalent of a whistle on the street: off-putting, potentially rude, and unwanted. Those are the ones I am certainly ignoring.

There are also many people who don’t subscribe to the ‘don’t like? Scroll’ concept and choose to say “why is this on my fyp” or “don’t quit your day job.” I’ve come to the conclusion that many folks like to bring people just living life down. Perhaps they themselves have insecurities leading them to think, “I could never.” Maybe they just get joy from other people’s hurt. Who knows, not everyone grew up with the concept of be the good you want to see in the world.

In summary, protect your peace. Don’t take a stranger’s opinion too close to heart because you don’t know them and they don’t know you. Especially if said stranger has no profile pic and no content of their own. That is just a hater. And guess what? Haters leaving comments triggers the algorithm on interactions. Though, those interactions could put your content out to the wrong groups leading to more distasteful comments. This is perhaps why I’ve seen so many, “ladies, please interact, I’ve been sent to x side of TikTok/Instagram.” Those are clever marketing ploys that both get your desired audience to interact and trigger your videos as interesting to an audience.

My Content Observations

So, why am I talking about people reacting to your content? Because the last couple weeks I have had some videos running through a promotion company’s ads manager. The statistics are interesting. The comments are a mixed bag. And unfortunately, it is not resulting in too many additional streams on my song. I’ve managed to get 26 Spotify streams. Not nothing, but not ideal. However, my TikTok follower count is as of the time of writing up to 917. That is incredible! I am almost at the coveted 1,000 person goal! I am concerned, though, that it isn’t my ideal audience. Like many seem to be having problems with, where are my fellow ladies at?! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate every person, I’m just confused as to why 79% are men.

There is a more even spread for viewers, which is great to see.

I find my skit style videos or well done short music video style content do way better than my quick and dirty face to camera lip synchs. My guess is people are tired of the classic Musica.ly lip sync and want to see creativity. This will guide what I do for future videos in relation to Music. My standard VO videos I plan to keep as-is.

All in all, creating content is a time-consuming endeavor, but worth it for artists getting their art out there. I wish I was better at it, but I’m sure that will come with time.
